13 Star “Betsy Ross” Boat flag 1900’s ca.
American National Flag with 13 Stars exhibited in one of the most recognized star patterns on the American Flag known as, the “Betsy Ross” Pattern. The flag is made of heavy cotton; 13 cotton stars are double applique attached to the canton with zigzag stitching with an anomaly in the placement of the stars occurring with one slight break within the circle; stripes are attached with double rows of linear machine stitching, it’s folded over at the hoist and fly also with double rows of linear stitching, which one may reasonably presume that the heavy cotton and double reinforcements made on the flag were used to strengthen it for use on a small craft boat flag.
Thirteen Star Flags represent the original 13 Colonies of the United States. On June 14, 1777 the U.S. Continental Congress adopted a resolution that Stated: Resolved, the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes and alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.” As new states were added to the union a star was added to the flag for each new addition.
Condition is very good; 4 areas of fabric separation on stripes, top left canton small hole, bottom left canton loose machine threads; slight material loss on the back mainly on the fly
