13 Star Flag -Needle Point Civil War Era
13 STAR AMERICAN FLAG NEEDLEPOINT PEN WIPE, 19th Century
Rare needlepoint pen wipe embroidered using wool yarn to create this beautiful illustration of a 13 Star American national flag representing the 13 original American Colonies. What truly sets this artifact apart from like- kind specimens of this period is how the originator took the time to sew the family name on a black felt tag and hand stitched it to the back of the flag.
Gazing at this flag it is easy to envision the person who meticulously spent time embroidering this beautiful needlepoint relic back in the 19th Century. Needlepoint examples similar to this were often times used to clean the tip of a dip pen during use but decorative variations as which may be the case here, were used as pincushions, decorative furnishings, or given as gifts that often became a treasured heirloom passed down from one generation to the next.
