American National Pennant; "One Nation Under God"

American National Pennant, “One Nation Under God”

Rare and unusual 1950’s banner with the phrase “One Nation Under God” stenciled across the pennant. Examination of the pennant revealed the red stain located in the center of the flag to be paint and appears likely to have been factory applied at the time of construction. A company label with its logo is attached to the hoist by machine stitching, and “ONE NATION” is stenciled in black letters directly on the hoist.

Throughout the 1950’s President Dwight D. Eisenhower revolutionized the role of religion in American political culture. It was during that time Congress added the phrase “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance which is recited today as “One Nation under God”, and on July 30, 1956 “In God We Trust” became the Country’s first official motto.
