Nathaniel Currrier Litho "Washington"

RARE, ORIGINAL, 1840's PRESIDENTIAL PORTRAIT HAND COLORED STONE LITHOGRAPH by NATHANIEL CURRIER (later of Currier & Ives) AND TITLED SIMPLY “WASHINGTON”.

This outstanding and exceptionally attractive portrait of George Washington is not listed in Currier’s Guide to Currier & Ives (at least the sizes listed in the catalog do not correspond to the size of this example). This Lithograph is framed in an original 1840’s, Ogee style Frame.

This outstanding image is a very early example of Nathaniel Currier and as such important to the history of Currier & Ives. The Image area measures approx. 9” by 12 1/4” and retains margins of 1" to 1 1/2" on each of the edges ( overall size of sheet is 11 3/4” by 15 3/4”). The Lithograph is undated but carries the mark of the lithographer - “Lith. & Pub. by N. Currier, 2 Spruce St., N.Y.”. It pictures George Washington in full figure wearing military dress and standing next to his horse. An artillery piece can be seen dismantled at the lower left hand corner and across the river in the background an American Flag flies over what appears to be a Revolutionary War era fortress.
This print is framed in what appears to be its original, Ogee style frame with original glass and backboards. Overall size with frame is 16 3/8” by 20 1/4”.

This wonderful, 1840's, Hand Colored Lithograph is in very good, original condition. There is no physical damage of any kind - no tears, edge chips or repairs of any kind. The original hand coloring is bright and vibrant and the Lithograph has no soiling or significant staining. There is some light age toning to the outer edge of the sheet and some light and scattered foxing mostly confined to the margin areas. There is also a small and very light water stain in the upper margin (not affecting the Image area. With a light, professional cleaning this wonderful Washington Portrait Lithograph will display as near mint. The original frame is intact and sound and well preserved retaining its original glass and backboards.
