John Downes Whiting Painting
John Downes Whiting (1884 - 1977)
Known as Jack, John Downes Whiting was a nephew and namesake of John. J.H. Downes, one of the New Haven Paint and Clay Club's founders. From 1903 to 1910, Jack Whiting studied at the Yale School of the Fine Arts with Club founders John H. Niemeyer and George A. Thompson, and he received his B.F.A. in 1915.
He exhibited with the Rockport (MA) Artists Association, Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, and Connecticut Watercolor Society. Primarily an illustrator, he was known for his contributions to Boys Life and other magazines. His book titled Practical Illustration: a Guide for Artists was published in 1920.
